Genbeta are reporting that you can get a free version of the Divx Pro suite for a limited amount of time. All you need to do is go to Windows download or Mac download and download the divx pro software. You are asked for an email address during installation which will be used to send the Divx pro key to. You probably want to uncheck the 'I would also like to receive' offers.
The Divx pro serial will be send to the email that you have chosen during installation. To register the product copy the serial that is mentioned in the email and paste it into the Register Product window that can be accessed from the start menu. (Divx > Divx Converter > Register Products).
This is a limited offer as far as I know so make sure you head out immediately if you want to grab a free copy.
Update: Please note that the offer is no longer available. DivX Pro does not appear to be available anymore. The product that is now on offer on the DivX website is DivX Plus software. It comes as a free bundle that you can install on your Windows PC. You are free to install one, some or all of the components on your system.
Here is a short overview of what each component does on your system:
- DivX Plus Codec Pack - A full set of codecs used by the converter and the players.
- DivX Plus Converter - This component lets you convert videos to DivX (Avi, DivX) and DivX Plus (H.264 video in MKV container). Supports hardware acceleration and everything you would expect from a state of the art converter.
- DivX Plus Player - Can play popular video formats including DivX, Mp4 and Avi.
- DivX Plus Web Player - A browser plugin from the looks of it that lets you watch video streams right in your browser.
The package is useful if you want to create divx video files, or do not have a local player that can play the format. There are however several players that do, like VLC Media Player which plays divx video files natively.
